Child-centered play therapy is an evidence-based, developmentally appropriate way to provide mental health therapy for children. Simply put, play therapy is for children what talk therapy is for adults. By playing out thoughts and feelings, children can more easily express themselves. A play therapist is specially trained to develop a trusting relationship with a child, help them express and work through their challenges, and move toward healing and growth.

Being a parent is hard work and kids don't come with instruction manuals! I strongly encourage parenting meetings for all of the caregivers of children who begin play therapy with me. For 30-45 minutes, once a month, I meet virtually with caregivers to talk about their child's therapeutic goals, progress in therapy, and observations I've made in the playroom. This is also a good time to discuss strategies caregivers are using at home and learn about other tools that can help. I am here to partner with you in your parenting journey!
For many young children, the best approach to treatment is to train caregivers in something called Filial Therapy. In this evidence-based type of therapy, the therapist will work separately with a caregiver to teach them basic play therapy skills so that they can become a therapeutic agent for their child during play sessions at home. As the caregiver learns the skills and practices them with their child, the therapist coaches and supports the caregiver with troubleshooting any difficulties that arise during play sessions.
As a former school counselor, I know how stressful school environments can be for children, teachers, and staff. Schools are underfunded and resources are stretched thin, making it hard for families to get the support they need for their children. My specialized knowledge of the education system can be a resource to help families navigate ways to get extra support for their children. I'm also available to meet with teachers and staff to brainstorm student classroom supports and other interventions.
